Nike approached WSDIA to create a Cross-Country (XC) destination—hybrid energy/event space with retail capabilities—for the NYC young runner, at historic Van Cortlandt Park (VCP) in the Bronx. The space had to stay flexible and adapt to multiple functions under a single umbrella idea.

The selected site was a tree filled, ten-foot-high sloped parking lot, across from VCP. The proposed site strategy was to maximize the available footprint of the lot by establishing a perimeter fence wall that defined the Nike space within the overall setting. The internal design was open plan, allowing visitors to circulate freely through the various areas, and permitting clear visual pathways and connections between the feature elements. A central gathering space with auditorium-style seating, presentation area, and a large screen anchored the environment. This area served as the focal gathering feature for various programming experiences.

The 4,000 sf temporary structure was designed and constructed within two months, and stayed open for four months.
